my dear, I say, there are men out there now picking tomatoes, lettuce, even cotton, there are men and women dying under the sun, there are men and women dying in factories for nothing, a pittance… I can hear the sound of human lives being ripped to pieces… you don’t know how lucky we are…

downers
some people grind away making their unhappiness the ultimate factor of their existence until finally they are just automatically unhappy, their suspicious upset snarling selves grinding
on and at and for and through
their only relief being
to meet another unhappy person
or to create one
paper and people.
“yes, other people don’t seem to have this problem with
PAPER PAPER PAPER gathering everywhere,
stacked upon itself,
and when people come to visit and shoot my hours through the head
they offer nothing interesting or constructive.
I find myself resenting them and
their chatter
their idle ways
since I am always fighting for each minute,
a minute to straighten this out or that...
Sorry for publishing the same post three times, Tumblr queued it wrongly.

Displaced - Bukowski
burning in hell this piece of me fits in nowhere as other people find things to do with their time places to go with one another things to say to each other.
I am burning in hell some place north of Mexico. flowers don’t grow here.
I am not like other people other people are like other people.
they are all alike: joining grouping huddling they are both gleeful and content and i am burning in...
mycaind asked: I was wondering if you knew any audiobooks that I can listen to online of Bukowski's stuff? Or good interviews of Bukowski.
imstylingonyouhoes asked: I'm looking for all the bukowski poetry books (as many of your followers and lovers of poetry are, but do you have any idea were I might find "As Buddah Smiles". It's a posthumous book, so it surprises me when I only see it on amazon for $135. On that note, I'd love to find any of the harder to find out (basically anything from 1969 and before). If you could post this so...
big night on the town
drunk on the dark streets of some city,
it's night, you're lost, where's your
room?
you enter a bar to find yourself,
order scotch and water.
damned bar's sloppy wet, it soaks
part of one of your shirt
sleeves.
It's a clip joint-the scotch is weak.
you order a bottle of beer.
Madame Death walks up to you
wearing a dress.
she sits down, you buy her a
beer, she stinks of swamps, presses
a leg...

in one ear and out the other
my father had memorized many sayings that he liked to repeat over and over: “if you can’t succeed, suck eggs!” “my country, right or wrong!” “early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise!”
my mother just smiled as he mouthed these pearls of wisdom. me? I thought, this man is a fool.
“any man who wants a job can get one!” was one of his favorites during the...

what is placed before us is artifice, an illusion, a lie.
the womb has spilled us into a sewer.
new gods are needed.
new doors must be opened.
we have waited so long for so little.
we must rip the enclosures open.

I'm a failure
I locked my car door and this guy walked up he looked like my old friend Peter but it wasn’t Peter it was a skinny dude in blue workshirt and torn jeans and he said, “hey, man, my wife and I need something to eat! we’re starving!” I looked behind him and there was his woman and she stared at me her eyes brimming with tears. I gave him a five. “I love you, man!” he hollered, “and I’m not going to...

we are always asked to understand the other person’s viewpoint no matter how out-dated foolish or obnoxious. one is asked to view their total error their life-waste with kindliness, especially if they are aged. but age is the total of our doing. they have aged badly because they have lived out of focus, they have refused to...

Bukowski Interview '86
Duval: Where is hope? And hope in your work?
Bukowski: The hope is a touch of graceful humor, no matter what’s occurring. The ability to laugh, the ability to see the ridiculous, the ability not to tense up too much, when things become impossible, just to face them anyhow. A touch of humor. Let’s say laughter through the flame. Or, guts. Courage… Humor, guts, and courage, no matter the odds. We can always face that…
so you want to be a writer?
if it doesn’t come bursting out of you in spite of everything, don’t do it. unless it comes unasked out of your heart and your mind and your mouth and your gut, don’t do it. if you have to sit for hours staring at your computer screen or hunched over your typewriter searching for words, don’t do it. if you’re doing it for money or fame, don’t do it. if you’re doing it because you want women in...

met a man on the street
who said, “you’ve kept me going for two years, it’s really amazing to meet you.”
“thank you,” i answered, “but who’s going to keep me going?”
i’ve asked this question before and all i ever get back is a gentle smile.
but it’s a good question.
they have no notion that i may consider suicide several times a week.
they’ve read some of my books and that’s enough for them.
but i only write that...
